Ganesh Chaturthi also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi is a popular Hindu festival dedicated to Lord Ganesha. It is celebrated with great enthusiasm and devotion in many parts of India and even in some parts of the world where there is a significant Hindu population. The festival typically falls in the month of Bhadrapada which usually falls between August and September according to the Gregorian calendar. It lasts for a duration of 10 days during which various rituals and celebrations take place.
The festival begins with the installation of Ganesha idols in homes and public pandals (temporary structures) beautifully decorated with flowers and lights. People believe that Lord Ganesha the remover of obstacles and the lord of wisdom and prosperity visits their homes during this time. They offer prayers chant mantras and perform aarti (a ritual of light) to seek his blessings. Devotees also observe fasts and opt for a vegetarian diet during this period as a mark of respect for Lord Ganesha. In addition to the religious customs cultural events like music and dance performances dramas and community processions are organized throughout the festival. The final day of the festival known as Ananta Chaturdashi is the most significant. On this day devotees take part in the immersion ceremony called visarjan where the Ganesha idols are taken in a grand procession and immersed in water bodies like rivers lakes or the sea. The visarjan symbolizes the departure of Lord Ganesha and his return to Mount Kailash his divine abode. Ganesh Chaturthi is not only a religious festival but also an occasion for social cohesion and cultural celebrations. It brings people together irrespective of their caste creed or social status to celebrate and seek the blessings of Lord Ganesha. It promotes unity harmony and the spirit of togetherness among communities. However in recent years there has been an increasing awareness about the environmental impact of Ganesha idols made of non-biodegradable materials like Plaster of Paris (PoP) and chemical paints. To address this concern there has been a growing trend of using eco-friendly materials and natural colors for idol making as well as opting for artificial immersion tanks instead of water bodies. This helps in preserving the environment and preventing pollution. Ganesh Chaturthi is a time when people come together to celebrate the auspicious presence of Lord Ganesha in their lives. It is a festival that not only honours and worships the deity but also strengthens the bonds of love compassion and gratitude among individuals and communities.
